(A)void

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. April 2018. (A)void was the culmination of my undergraduate studies.

This body of work examines human vulnerability, exploring how we shape ourselves and our relationships and by looking at what we let slip through our metaphorical walls and defense mechanisms that protect our inner fragility.

Through interacting with the piece, the viewer mimics the process of getting to know someone; the first glimpses reveal only a little, and ultimately leaves the viewer to decide whether they desire to learn more or walk away. The various apertures, as well as the semi-transparent fabric panels offer more visual information as the viewer moves about the piece. Though they are able to observe more as they continue to engage with the work, the viewer finally is confronted by the fact that no angle offers a perfect view

I view this piece as a self-portrait; throughout my life I have struggled sharing deeply personal stories and information, often using my outgoing personality to avoid the discomfort of vulnerability. Yet, there are individuals who come in and out of my life that immediately see through me. Others take time to work their way in, discovering moments and experiences slowly and methodically until they come to an understanding that they are satisfied with. Many take me at face value and simply move on. I attempt to capture these types of personal interactions in this piece. Some viewers will enter the room and immediately look underneath or behind the piece to discover what is inside; most will look through the apertures of light one piece at a time, working their way around; some will merely look to the exterior of the piece and then no further.
